In Shakespeare’s time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes, the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase: “goodnight, sleep tight.”
I’ll bet you didn’t know that.
How often do we go through our day saying things that we really have no clue what they mean? How often do we causally throw out a rote response without significance? How often do we encounter the desperate, the hurting, the supernatural and don’t even know it?
Maybe we should be different.
Stay on good terms with each other, held together by love. Be ready with a meal or a bed when it’s needed. Why, some have extended hospitality to angels without ever knowing it! Regard prisoners as if you were in prison with them. Look on victims of abuse as if what happened to them had happened to you. —Hebrews 13:2
